Abstract/Summary

The study aims to elucidate the fundamental ideas of Gemino H. Abad, through his own clearing , on the matter of literary theory and criticism presented in his three important books on the said subject: In another light: poems and essays, A formal approach to lyric poetry, and The space between.

Focusing on The space between, the study seeks to present a clear picture of the development of Abad's critical consciousness through a synthesis of his major ideas on the on-going exchanges in the general field of criticism. It also intends to present Abad's own standpoint within the said continuing discussions, to take a deeper inquiry into the critic's dominant ideas: literature as a representation of reality, the Saussurean concept of reality as a linguistic construct, the space between language and consciousness and the crucial role of writers in the re-invention of language and, as a consequence, of reality, through an inventive appropriation of that language, whatever it may be.
