Abstract/Summary
Mango Manila is the name given to the carabao mango - the Philippines' premium export variety. Prior to export, the mangoes are meticulously classified based on superficial skin markings. Through recent advances in technology, it is now possible to apply a system that would automatically inspect and classify a sensitive fruit like mango. The Automated Mango Classifier is mainly composed of 2 parts: the vision and the conveyor system. The vision system uses a video camera as the eye and a computer unit as the mind. The conveyor system is a chain-type conveyor that allows the camera to see the whole mango image in one shot. As the mango travels along the conveyor, the camera shoots the mango's image. The information is processed using the image processing technique called histogram analysis and the computer monitor displays whether the mango is export-grade or not. In line with the envisioned Philippines 2000, it is hoped that the technology applied in the Automated Mango Classifier can open doors to a wide variety of applications in the export, agriculture, food and beverage industries to be keep abreast with the developments of the next millennium.
