Abstract/Summary

The main objective of this study is to develop a formation program for the Religion teachers of the twelve Dominican-owned schools in Region VI. The proposed development of the program is based on the following five aspects the results of the assessment on the needs of the Religion teachers, the results of the researchers previous MA studies, the Church's documents, recommendations and guidelines on Catholic education, the attitudes and values of the Religion teachers as generally observed, and the goals and objectives of the apostolate of the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines. The research covers all Religion teachers of the Dominican-owned schools in Region VI. The descriptive developmental method is used in gathering the data thru survey questionnaires, interview questions and workshop seminar to determine their needs and to serve as a basis for designing the modules for the formation program. The findings of this study show that Religion teachers have need of a thorough knowledge and understanding of the updated content and instructional skills in teaching religion subjects. They fairly rate on the Sacraments with a scale of 1.5 to 2.49 or achieved to a moderate extent. The findings also reflect that the Religion teachers lack an extensive knowledge especially on moral issues and the Catholic Social Teaching. The results on the knowledge of instructional skills indicate that most of the teachers use the following teaching techniques journal writing, presenting the correlation of the subject matter to real life situation, identifying the needs of the students, and stimulating their interests through the integration of real life experiences. Most of the Religion teachers noted the effectiveness of journal writing. The findings also show that teachers hardly utilize audio-visuals, such as films, in their classroom instructions. Moreover, the findings reveal the need for Religion teachers to enhance their skills and

effectiveness thru the use of the multi-media to address the identified problems and difficulties. The findings on the attitudes and values of the Religion teachers signify their active participation in the religious activities not only of the schools but also in their parishes, particularly, the Holy Eucharist. The following recommendations are suggested in the light of the findings and the conclusion: the teachers should update themselves on the content and approaches in teaching religion, they should undergo workshops and seminars, and the implementation of the seven-point modules, namely, 1) The Religion teacher, 2) Total development of the person in the charism of St. Dominic, 3) The call to fellowship with Christ in the context of the Church’s documents, 4) Following the compassionate Teacher, 5) Religion teachers as good ministers, 6) The art of teaching, and 7) Religion teacher, agent of transformation.

The proposed modules should be conducted to the Religion coordinators of the respondent schools, either in a workshop or seminar. They in turn will orient the Religion teachers in their respective schools. For a more effective implementation of the proposed formation program, the general chapter and the members of the formation team—school superintendent, principals, and the Religion coordinators—should pursue the proposed formation program that would lead to the effectiveness of the Congregation’s education apostolate. Likewise, this could also serve as a springboard for further formation of the members of the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines.
