Abstract/Summary

The study determines the variables that significantly correlate with teacher competence which is measured by the score obtained in a biology achievement test. One hundred twelve secondary Biology teachers in Region XII were the participants in the study. The Biology teachers were classified into: Biology majors, major in related sciences, and non-science majors. The teachers' scores in the achievement test were compared. The results of the study showed that:1. Efficiency rating, length of service in teaching Biology, and the type of school where the teachers teach, were significant correlates of teacher competence 2. The group of teachers who majored in Biology were most knowledgeable in their subject matter content as compared with the other groups (majors in Science-related subjects and non-Science majors) 3. The teachers were found to have a strong foundation in their knowledge of (a) chemical and cellular basis of life, (b) tissues and organ systems, (c) growth and reproduction, (d) genetics, (e) classification of organisms, and (e) ecology and,4. They were found to be relatively weak in their knowledge of the nature of Science and its domain. The following are recommended:1. A replication of this study should be undertaken in other regions of the country so that a comparative analysis of teacher competency can be determined 2. A parallel study be conducted among teachers of other Sciences like Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and General Science and,

3. An analysis of teacher competency in laboratory techniques and procedures and a survey of strategies used by Science teachers be undertaken.
