Abstract/Summary

Along the history of Catholic education, the formation of the whole human person or integral formation is the mission of Catholic school and university. This study aimed to develop a framework for understanding integral formation in Catholic higher education institutions in Indonesia. Based on the review of related literatures, the researcher considered an eclectic a priori conceptual framework consisted of four primary elements of integral formation in Catholic higher education institutions, which effectively affect whole person formation of student. They were: (1) The outcomes of integral formation, (2) The strategy of the leaders to carry out the formation, (3) The process of implementation, and (4) The sustainability of integral formation.

For the purpose of this study, the qualitative multiple case study method by Yin (2014) was used to describe the 'how or why' the integral formation took place in Catholic higher education institutions in Indonesia. According to Yin (2014), the more that the research questions seek to explain the "how" or "why" some social phenomenon works, the more the case study research will be relevant. The participants of this study were the six highest accreditation level of Catholic Universities in Indonesia with existing integral formation programs.

The data had been gathered based on the research questions. There were several sources of evidence used in collecting data from documents, archives, direct observations and interviews with 36 selected participants from 6 universities, consisted of the presidents and vice presidents, faculties and students.

After a thorough analysis of the data, the study discovered seven themes and twenty categories that constructed the framework of understanding the integral formation of Catholic Higher Education Institutions in Indonesia. These themes are: (1), The outcome of integral formation, (2) The strategic leadership role, (3) The transformational process of integral formation, (4) The role and identity of lecturer, (5) The continuous formation, (6) The context of integral formation, and (7) The significance of integral formation. The contextual factors which frame and situate the establishment and the mission of each Catholic university in Indonesia as well as its core values and spirituality are the distinctive and unique characteristics of the integral formation in Catholic higher education institutions in Indonesia.

The new framework and the findings of this study are recommended for practice and future research.
