Abstract/Summary
An emerging body of literature has underscored the role of English language in social intervention through peace values integration. Keeping in mind that English language is recognized as a potent instrument in developing and maintaining a culture of peace, the current study attempted to generate how the tenets of peace education are reflected in the English language program of De La Salle Lipa Junior High School through an examination of language learning modules and analysis of actual classroom discourse.
Qualitative research method was employed in the current study. Specifically, the grounded theory process was used in the analysis of the English language learning modules and transcriptions of videotaped data.
Results of the study revealed that various peace themes and peace concepts are reflected in the English language learning modules through content standards, performance standards, the institution’s guiding principles and content which is divided into three stages namely; establishing desired results, assessment evidence or transfer and learning plan flow. Moreover, various peace themes and concepts are also reflected in the actual classroom discourse through introduction, interaction and integration activities. The various peace themes and peace concepts emerging from the English language learning modules and videotaped data are found to be similar to various established global peace values integration models.
A pedagogical model of the English Language Program for a Lasallian Peaceful Communication was proposed which intends to make every English language lesson of De La Salle Lipa Junior High School a peace effort, every De La Salle Lipa English teacher a peace teacher and every De La Salle Lipa junior high school student a Lasallian peaceful communicator.
