Abstract/Summary

This explanatory multiple case study research on nascent academic entrepreneurs’ venture emergence adapts critical realism as a research philosophy and methodological approach. The study seeks to provide a comprehensive explanation of the phenomenon of nascent academic entrepreneurs’ venture emergence or successful venture creation of operational business ventures arising from academic research output by nascent academic entrepreneurs from four Philippine universities. Eight academic entrepreneurs from four universities: Manila Central University, Adamson University, University of the Philippines (Manila, Diliman, and Los Baños), and De La Salle University-Manila, are the subjects of the case study. The case study uses key person interviews, site observation visits, description of product samples, and review of documents and secondary literature to gather data and information. Data analyses are done by applying a critical realist’s three-step method of retroduction. The final output of the study is a theoretical framework that outlines a comprehensive explanation of the phenomenon of nascent academic entrepreneurs’ venture emergence in the three domains of reality, namely: the empirical, the actual, and the real.
