Abstract/Summary

The study aimed to investigate the sources of work stress and if the factors rank, age, length of service and salary are predictive of the work stress level of Indonesian policemen at the criminal department of Polda Metro Jaya.

The participants involved in the study were 50 policemen who responded to the Map Stress Questionnaire (MSQ) designed by Cooper (1990) in assessing the level of work stress and the structured interview questionnaire designed by the researcher.

The results of the multiple regression analysis showed that rank and salary are the only two variables that significantly predicted the stress level of policemen. The data from the structured interview questionnaire administered to six (6) policemen indicated that their sources of work stress were: (a) the danger they are exposed to regularly (b) the demands of the general public on them (c) the expectations on them to work more than the required amount of time (d)sanctions given by the superiors when they failed to finish the assigned tasks and (e) low income.

Furthermore, the participants coping resources were (a) strong faith in God (b) giving ones best performance on the job (c) time for relaxation like dancing, going out with friends (d) doing extra job for additional income.

Implications for improving the general welfare and wellness of policemen and recommendations for further researches are discussed.
