Abstract/Summary
The major purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between job motivational factors and job satisfaction among first line managers of an automotive company in Indonesia. Phase I of the study involved 35 of first level managers whose written essays on the motivational factors and job satisfaction in line with Herzbergs two factor theory were analyzed. Phase II, the qualitative part, examined the relationships between the motivational factors (independent variable) and job satisfaction (dependent) variable, and likewise identified which among the of the independent variables were found to be strong predictors of job satisfaction.
Results showed that all the motivational factors both intrinsic and extrinsic were positively correlated with job satisfaction. Among the intrinsic factors, achievement, work itself, and advancement were correlated with job satisfaction. The extrinsic factors of working condition, motivation and interpersonal relationship were correlated with job satisfaction. Among the intrinsic factors, recognition and advancement were strong predictors of job satisfaction, whereas, among the extrinsic factors work conditions, supervision, and interpersonal relationships were seen as strong predictors of job satisfaction.
As recommendations, management should provide the conditions where motivational factors could be enhanced in order for its employees to be satisfied at work. The company should also address how it can make its employees motivated and happy at work.
