Abstract/Summary
A study was conducted regarding political socialization, the perceived incidents and agents that influence one's political interest and factors affecting their decision to file for candidacy. The approach used was a descriptive research with 30 aspiring candidates who were running this election as a city councilor around Metro Manila as samples. The participants were obtained through convenient and snowball sampling. A semi-structured interview questionnaire was prepared and all transcribed interviews were subjected to content analysis. Common themes based from the data were included in the results and were then interpreted. Themes which emerged as agents influencing the respondents' political interests were political strategizing, discourse, venues for political socialization and information. Themes that emerged as contributory factors that made aspiring candidates file for candidacy, on the other hand, were social support, political ambition, political family legacy, personal achievement, people's calling and public service as an act. Additional inferences were new agents and factors emerged were interpreted while themes in agents (teachers and religion) and factors (gender and income) that did not emerged from the data but were supported by past studies were removed. The discussion revolved around themes emerging from the data gathered within the bounds of Filipino context.
