Abstract/Summary
The present study focuses on the mediating effects of self-control on authoritative parenting and health-risk behavior. A correlational research design was used by the researchers to test the extent of the association between three variables: authoritative parenting, self-control, and health-risk behavior. Hence, the researchers hypothesized that self-control mediates the relationship between authoritative parenting and adolescent health-risk behavior based from the overall conceptual framework. Using survey method, data was gathered from a sample of 143 Filipino adolescents aged 18-21 years old that have lived with their primary caregivers since the aged of 3 up to the present, and are from universities in the National Capital Region (NCR) . Three scales and inventories were used by the researchers. The Parenting Style Inventory-II was used to measure the level of authoritative parenting perceived by the adolescent. The self-control scale was used to assess their level of self-control through a self-report. Lastly, the adolescent exploratory and risk behavior rating Scale measured health-risk behavior. Results of the study show non-significant correlation between authoritative parenting and health-risk behavior, and authoritative parenting and self-control. Thus, self-control did not serve as a mediating variable in the relationship of authoritative parenting and risk behavior. These results led to the rejection of the main hypothesis of the research. However through intensive analysis of data, the researchers found that age and gender influence adolescent behavior more compared to parenting. The research also showed that parenting behaviors are influenced by the age and gender of the adolescent.
