Abstract/Summary

For the last several years, Metro Manila has been experiencing sustained economic growth and development. As a result, there is an increase in vehicular flow and movements within the metropolis. Several road infrastructure improvements were constructed and one of these is the elevated u-turn slot in the C-5 and Kalayaan Avenue intersection. Due to this situation, the elevated u-turn slot was constructed and is located in C-5 Kalayaan to alleviate the traffic congestion in the area. The main objective of the study is to propose a highway design that would improve the current traffic condition in the C-5 Kalayaan intersection. In order to do so, the researchers determined the current traffic demand in the network using the basic traffic low parameters. From there, the researchers evaluated which highway design would improve the traffic behavior in the network after five years.

The study used the EMME3 software, a computer program that is able to provide a simulation of the observed condition in the network exhibiting the auto and transit volumes, travel time and traffic and transit assignments in the area of study. In addition, the actual data of volume, speed and density that the researchers gathered on site were used to calibrate the simulation output of the computer program. The researchers proposed a new highway design in the C-5 Kalayaan network that improved the behavior of traffic in the whole Metro Manila network. The new design was evaluated using the same parameters generated by the computer program. Thus, based from the results that was provided in the EMME program, the study concludes that the proposed highway design is more efficient in improving the traffic condition on the C-5 Kalayaan intersection.
