Abstract/Summary
This study aims to control the temperature of a slurry reactive system using ON-OFF mode of control. It also includes the determination of the rate of reaction of Calcium Hydroxide with Sulfuric Acid and the effects of the temperature on the reaction rate, the reaction rate constant and the activation energy.
To control the temperature of the reactive system, the amount of hot water entering the jacket of the reactor is controlled using a solenoid valve. When the temperature of the reactive system deviates from the desired temperature, the controller sends a signal to the valve. The solenoid valve turns ON if the temperature of the reactive system is lower than the desired temperature and it turns OFF if the temperature is higher. A batch process is employed wherein the reactants are poured at the same time. Samples are withdrawn and analyzed at an interval of 2 minutes to measure the rate of reaction where the adsorption indicator method is used. Using appropriate equations as a function of concentration, the rate of reaction, the reaction rate constant and activation energy are determined.
