Abstract/Summary

The advent of the Information Age has brought about the birth of new forms of telecommunications systems. With the recent success of the Internet service, it has since redefined the art of sending data. There now comes a need to harness the availability of the existing local area network technology and to develop a more improved communication between computers. The existing local area network technology permits the exchange of data between two or more persons via the use of computers. The thesis aims to be able to improve this setup by transmitting audio signals, instead of text, from one user to another. The development of the thesis constituted the use of computer based audio equipment as well as software packages. The local area network will provide the physical link between users. The exchange of audio signals needed microphones connected to Sound Blaster Cards and speakers to output the sound. Finally, a software was developed to handle the communication intricacies of the local area network.
