Abstract/Summary

This is a descriptive study which aimed to identify and describe the problems, coping styles sources of support and kinds of support of Filipino adolescent mothers before pregnancy and after child birth grouped according to socio-economic status (namely: low, middle and high). The participants were thirty Filipino adolescent mothers whose age ranged from 15-21 years old living within the vicinity of Metro Manila. Ten participants belonged to the upper socio-economic status, another ten participants belonged to the middle socio-economic status and the remaining ten belonged to the lower socio-economic status. The participants were chosen using the purposive sampling method. The researchers used interview guide questions for the in-depth interview as an instrument for gathering data. Responses were transcribed then subjected to cross tabulations. The results were then analyzed using content analysis. On the other hand, results showed that maajority of the respondents had financial difficulties regardless of the time duration of pregnancy and their socio-economic status. Most of the respondents resolve through prayers as their way of coping up to their problems, regardless of the time duration of pregnancy and their socio-economic status. However, socio-economic status greatly affects the sources of support of the adolescent mothers. In addition, the kinds of support received by the adolescent mothers were almost similar regardless of the time duration of pregnancy, however, SES greatly influences it. Moreover, the support that the adolescent mothers received helped them in coping up with their problems.
