Abstract/Summary
The design manual developed in this thesis project aims to assist the structural designer in eliminating excessive calculations done in computing for the reinforced concrete sections and reinforcements. Although there are presently design aids to be found in handbooks and textbooks and in special volumes published by well-established organizations such as the American Concrete Institute, the accessibility of these literature to a large portion of practicing design engineers in this country is limited. This thesis project seeks to augment the stock of reference materials available locally.
In form, the design aids presented in this manual are dimensional as compared to the American Concrete Institute's generalized charts and tables. This has the advantage of considerably reducing the number of peripheral calculations required. By specifying a particular combination of fc and fy and dimension of a section, the required area of steel reinforcement or stirrup spacing can easily be determined. Two methods (USD and WSD) in designing a reinforced concrete structure were used. The design aid for USD includes design for flexure (rectangular beams), design for combined shear and torsion (rectangular beams) and design of columns.
