Abstract/Summary

This study dealt on the perceptions of adolescent grandchildren and their grandparent on the quality of their interaction based on the patterns of communication and the stressful feelings toward the equity of their relationship. The roles that each of them play in the interaction were also described in this study. The study made use of non-probability sampling, where participants were purposively chosen by setting the following criteria in choosing the participants: first year high school students, aged 12 to 14 years old, who have a grandfather and a grandmother living in Metro Manila and are willing to be interviewed. The researchers were able to acquire data from the ten cases, wherein it was constituted by five males and five female adolescents enrolled in various schools, belonging to low-middle socio-economic status and their respective grandparents. The case studies were acquired from unstructured interviews and observations. Results showed that adolescent grandchildren and their grandparents engaged in conversational activities like discussing about the conditions of grandchildren particularly about schoolrather than activities for entertainment. It also showed that adolescent grandchildren are have a slightly higher degree of stressful feelings toward the equity of their relationship as compared to their grandparents. More adolescents felt guilty about the shortcomings they commit during their interaction. Findings in this study revealed that both generations perceive the following roles namely: adviser, financial provider, surrogate parent and friend that grandparents play during their interaction. Adviser is the most dominant role. While the following roles namely: material provider, caretaker, follower, playmate and friend are the roles played by adolescent grandchildren in the lives of their grandparents, wherein follower is the most dominant role.
