Abstract/Summary

Urban-rural migration is a type of internal migration that goes beyond traditional internal migration. Though relatively new, there are studies that have shown how influential urban to rural migration is to an individuals mental health. In relation to this, it has been widely discussed that mental health or an individuals physical, emotional and social well-being is highly responsive to the physical environment he or she is exposed to. This study discusses and contributes to the study of urban-rural migration and its evidence in the certain rural areas in the Philippines. In depth interview were conducted with a chosen group of 8 participants aged 18 and above who have moved from urban areas to a rural are. Through the interviews, themes were drawn out from the statements made by the participants. Content analysis was the method utilized and the lived experiences of the participants were used as units of analysis. The themes were then categorized into 6 that further helped develop the study. These involved stressors of urban living, personal disadvantages of urban cities, favorable living conditions, feeling of being part of a community, the sense of happiness, and positive change in personal qualities. The results highlighted factors of urban living that had urged participants to migrate and also showed evidences of that the participants physical, emotional and social well-being had improved after moving to the locale.
