Abstract/Summary

Meditation is commonly associated with seriousness, calmness and quietness. However, the researchers found out that sense of humor and meditation has overlapping characteristics and benefits. With this in mind, the researchers wanted to see if there really is a relationship between meditation and sense of humor. For this purpose two standardized tests were answered by 60 people and semi-structured in-depth interviews were also conducted. For the data analysis, content analysis was used to produce descriptive categories, which have been further developed to analytical categories. In the findings of the quantitative approach, meditation is not significantly correlated with sense of humor. As for the findings of the qualitative approach, meditation practitioners have said beneficial experiences of meditation that are represented by the core categories: practical and profound personal benefits. The benefits of their sense of humor are represented by the following themes: becoming light, happiness and laughing at ones self. Implications of the result and directions for further research were discussed.
