Abstract/Summary

The study seeks to describe the significant interpersonal relationships of father-absent children. Twelve father-absent children, aging from thirteen to eighteen years old, and belonging to the low economic strata were used as participants. The participants were chosen through a non-probability referral sampling and the method pakikipagsulatan followed by a clarification interview was conducted. The nature of the interpersonal relationship of the participants was first determined so as to be able to formulate a description of their significant interpersonal relationship. Findings on the nature of the interpersonal relationship of the participants showed that their relationship with their mother and friends are considered most significant and they establish these relationships through obedience and helping each other in times of difficulty. The participants did not found any difficulty in expressing their emotions, feelings and affections nor did they find it difficult to relate to the opposite gender. In terms of future relationship they expect a better interpersonal relationships. Findings on the description of the interpersonal relationship of father-absent children based on the nature of their interpersonal relationship showed that father-absent boys experience difficulty in a relationship due to lack of knowledge in masculine development. A father-absent child places great value on their relationship with their mother followed by their friends. They can easily express their emotions, feelings or affections toward their significant interpersonal relationship. Finally, they long for a much better family relationship in the future.
