Abstract/Summary

This documentary video explored the multifaceted bulong system that continues to be practiced in Navotas, the largest fishing port in the country. Advantages and disadvantages to the system's players were scrutinized through observations, as well as interviews.

The project is a documentary on the bulong system, a marketing strategy that has been perpetuated for the past centuries in the biggest fishing port in the country, Navotas. The documentary dissected the multifaceted process of the distribution starting from the point where the fishes are brought down from the fishing vessels, and the time they are secretly bided according to their quantity, size and kind by the fish brokers, to the point where the middleman selects the wholesaler who has the highest bid and finally when the banyeras won by the wholesaler during the bid are resold to retailers who will then sell them to consumers at the local markets or transport them to nearby provinces and vicinities.

The documentary presented the direct consequences of the bulong system to the fish boat owners, fish brokers, retailers and consumers. It displayed the financial and social advantages and disadvantages of the system through the use of interviews and actual footage.

Furthermore, it explored the relationships between these respondents as they live in sync with the system and how the system has molded each of them as active participants, allowing this system to carry on until today.
