Abstract/Summary
Film has changed a lot through the years. Numerous advances in consumer technology have empowered the masses & most especially the youth into pursuing their artistic calling. The transition into the digital age has commercialized film making & has made it more accessible to the masses. What was once known as alternative films has changed into what today is now known as independent films. To pay homage to these works, independent film festivals were organized by industry movers not only as a way to showcase them, but also to inspire people to join the craft and revolutionize it.
Seeing this opportunity Dyna Media Productions organizes Sineng Bago at Orihinal na Likha or SIBOL, the first Philippine student short film festival. Albeit a successful event in its own right, there are plenty of areas by which the event can improve on to come closer to the recognition of industry key independent festivals like Cinemalaya & Cinemanila, as well as school equivalents like the Ateneo Video Open.
The study therefore looks into the different factors that make a successful independent film festival locally. In-depth interviews (IDI) was done with 30 professors teaching the craft to which the study assumes to be representative of the student population.
The study finds that SIBOL needs to invest more on increasing event awareness to the different schools by adding more value to the event. The study has found that this can be achieved through improvements in event logistics, participation of industry recognized bodies, as well as careful consideration in seeking sponsorship.
The findings of the study were exclusively taken from professors and to some extent from industry recognized bodies. The researchers therefore recognize that there is a need to further look into the opinions of the prospective participants, the students.
