Abstract/Summary

ISIS is an expert diagnostic and consultation system in the medical field of ophthalmology. The thesis project wishes to address the problem of adequate expertise in the medical field that could be accessible to the general population. The eye disease was chosen as the medical application because it is a field that entails meticulousness and completeness which can only be obtained from vast experiences in diagnostic and surgical techniques. In other words, it is a field which entails considerable expertise. A PC based expert system in ophthalmology would be another attempt to close the gap between the general public and the experts in eye diseases. Methods used to achieve this main objective is a continuous process of collecting data and analyzing data obtained. Trying to get a glimpse of what ophthalmology really is by associating with expert physicians in the field. Capturing at least some of their knowledge into a system that emulates the expert is the greatest challenge of the project.
