Abstract/Summary
This study was concerned with the seven qualities of the Filipino entrepreneur which have helped him become successful. The seven qualities of Leadership, Vision, Innovation, Planning, Decision-Making, Risk-Taking and Problem-Solving were assumed to be products of the aspects of upbringing, educational background, and work experience. The entrepreneurs Locus of Control were also studied, so as to know if a particular subjects was an internalizer or an externalizer when it came to their career success. The study was done on twelve (12) successful entrepreneurs within the vicinity of Metro Manila, and were all alumni of De La Salle University. The age of the respondents ranged from 34 to 72 years, all have businesses of their own, or is a major partner. The researchers made and utilized their own in-depth interview guide, designed to reveal the kind of upbringing, the quality of education, and the experiences while in the work setting, that the subject had. The interview also involved questions about the entrepreneurs' present businesses, their perceptions of success, and their plans for the future. As supplementary instruments for the interview, seven self-assessment questionnaires were also administered, namely, the Leadership Orientation Questionnaire, the Innovation Styles Profile, the Goal-Setting Self-Assessment Exercise, the Decision-Making Style Questionnaire, the Risk-Taking Self-Assessment Scale, the Brain Preferences Indicator Test, and a Specimen of the Internal-External Scale Test Variation. The frequencies were obtained and recorded in various
tables, in order to show the similarities and differences the subjects had in the upbringing, educational background, and work experience. The results showed that the subjects had memorable childhoods, were just average students in school and a majority of which graduated with Commerce degrees, went through different jobs before becoming entrepreneurs. It was also discovered that the seven qualities, which have helped them become successful indeed, are all products of the training and discipline in the upbringing, educational background and work experience. Success, in their opinion, is not so much as material wealth, but a happy home life, contentment, the ability to do whatever one desires, and the capacity to help others. These entrepreneurs have found to be as a people-oriented leader, a visionary, an innovative, has a strong understanding of goal setting technique, a consultative decision maker, a moderate risk taker, a left brain dominant problem solver and an internalizer.
