Abstract/Summary

This exploratory study deals with the psychological process involved in the concept of being stoked. The researchers conducted this study because of its growing popularity and usage among extreme sports athletes which most people have very little or no understanding at all of the term. The researchers explored this stoked phenomenon to give a better and clear understanding of the term and attempt to give a definite meaning. The researchers gathered people, specifically extreme sports athletes, who claim to have experienced being stoked and conducted an interview focusing on their personal experiences. Participants reported having euphoric and exaggerated mixed emotions all at the same time when accomplishing something new and out of the normal that involves extreme difficulty of the task involved. Cognitive effects such as a mind going blank or being more focused, associated behaviors such as hyperactivity and being impulsive, and manifested behaviors such as expressions and being more motivated are further discussed in this paper.
