Abstract/Summary

The widespread use and implementation of Local Area Networks (LAN) in any business today has been a source of growth and advancement. Considerations in installing a network system consisting of co-terminal communications are its cost, convenience and security. These considerations are highly dependent on the complexity and number of terminals integrated into the system. Such systems are relatively costly to implement since they require the installation of dedicated leased lines. This project attempts to implement the network system using AC lines as a medium of communication in lieu of ordinary transmission lines to eliminate the cost of new line installation. However, since AC lines are inherently noisy, spread spectrum technique was used to allow relative noise-free data transmission. The use of AC lines gives the system more hardware flexibility since adding or moving terminals, from one location to another, only requires the utilization of existing AC outlets within a particular premises. In addition, spread spectrum techniques achieves privacy in communication by spreading the information over a wider bandwidth to mask it in the background noise to remain undetected by illegal or unauthorized users.
