Abstract/Summary
The increasing proliferation of low-cost microcomputer networks has brought distributed computing within reach of the entire microcomputer user community. By applying concepts of distributed programming, applications can be made to efficiently exploit the advantages of such architecture. Several distributed Programming languages have been developed to achieve this purpose. JULIA is a research project which involves the design and implementation of a runtime system for distributed programming. Execution of distributed programming involves two phases: the first phase includes precompilation of the input distributed program to C and, thus, making this program suitable for compilation on ordinary C compiler the second phase includes all activities during actual execution. JULIA was implemented on a local area network (LAN) on top of MS-DOS. JULIA supports large-grain parallelism. An important aspect of the project is to provide programmers with a distributed programming language that allows parallel applications to be written and executed in the JULIA runtime system. The thrust of the project does not involve the development of a distributed operating system (DOS) nor defining a new distributed language. Rather, the project intends be a simple platform where distributed programs can execute. Index terms: Distributed Computing Systems, distributed programming, programming languages.
