Abstract/Summary

Libraries have the basic function of aiding the parent institution in carrying out its objectives. The library contributes to the realization of these objectives and supports the total program by acquiring and making available the books, materials and services needed. The Cataloging Section is involved in this realization by providing the abovementioned books and materials at the soonest possible time.

The Cataloging Section of the De La Salle University Library is responsible for the recording and organization of bibliographic information in order to maintain the library's collection. The Cataloging Section makes use of manual procedures in its operations. With the ever-increasing number, variety and complexity of library materials, it becomes imperative that the Cataloging Section automate its processes to increase efficiency and the standard of work. For this reason, the group undertook a study of the cataloging processes to determine how to develop an information system that will not only alleviate the Cataloging Section of its problems but to provide assistance for all library users as well.

To commence the study, the group conducted preliminary investigations to be oriented with the basic processes and procedures involved in the cataloging of books. Extensive interviews, researches on related materials and a detailed analysis of the current manual system was conducted. Information gathered from the above procedures were analyzed using data flow diagrams and process flow charts which served as the framework for the development of the computerized system.
