Abstract/Summary

The present study focuses on how gender plays a role in determining the relationship of depression proneness and coping mechanism such as substance use (e.g.alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking), and humor or humorous coping. The researchers gathered a total of 345 participants by which 169 participants were males, then the remaining 176 participants were females. All participants are Filipinos within the age range of 16 - 24 years of age. The researchers gathered participants through online and written/offline surveys. Depression Proneness was measured through DPRS or Depression Proneness Rating Scale by Zemore, Fischer, Garratt & Miller (1990), whereas the tendency of individuals to engage through coping mechanisms were measured through teh COPE Inventory by Carver (2013). COPE has a total of 60-items but prior to the study, the researchers only use 8 questions (4-items each) that are essential in measuring substance use and humor use as coping mechanisms. As for the results in Case 1 (Gender, Depression Proneness and Substance use), the moderating effect of gender to the relationship of depression proneness and substance use as coping showed significance. In addition to this significance, females garnered a higher tendency to engage themselves in alcohol drinking or cigarette smoking. On the other hand, in Case 2 (Gender, Depression Proneness and Humor) , the moderating effect of gender showed no significance in the relationship of depression proneness and humor as a coping mechanism.
