Abstract/Summary

Documentation has been a very vital issue in software engineering and in system analysis and design. The system life cycle can be easily studied with the proper use of documentation. This means that effective documentation tools are also vital in life cycle. HIPO is one of the various documentation tools that exist today. However, there are processes in the technique that are repetitive in nature, thus making it very tedious and time--consuming. With enough research of the HIPO together with the other tools and software that can be associated with it, an automated HIPO can be developed that can take away the burden of the tedious works and will speed up the process of documentation. The automation of HIPO can be considered as an effective way of showing its capability as a documentation tool. The automation includes the automatic generation of reference number, the hierarchy chart, and the IPO charts. Another important feature that would be of great help is the inclusion of a data dictionary. The automated HIPO can be further enhanced by making it as an effective design tool by including data coupling and cohesion as a major concern.
