Abstract/Summary

While most banks have a profile of the Filipino credit cardholders, this information is not readily accessible. This paper aimed to profile credit card users in the Philippines and make this data available for public use. The researchers examined the relationship of the socio-demographic and work-related characteristics of credit cardholders and their credit card usage. The socio-demographic characteristics include gender, age, marital status, and educational attainment while the work-related characteristics include occupation and gross monthly salary. The credit card usage was determined through five usage indicators, which were based from past studies. Using purposive and snowball sampling techniques, the researchers were able to survey 431 credit cardholders who are employed in Makati City. These credit cardholders are 21-60 years of age and have owned a principal credit card for at least a year. Statistical tools such as descriptive analysis, cross tabulation, chi-square, and one-way ANOVA were then applied to describe and test the relationship of credit card usage to socio-demographic characteristics and work-related characteristics. The findings of the study revealed that among the socio-demographic characteristics, only gender had no effect. To an extent, the socio-demographic characteristics age, marital status, and educational attainment, as well as work-related characteristics occupation and gross monthly salary had a significant relationship with credit card usage. This paper can help the current and future credit cardholders on their financial planning.
