Abstract/Summary
Researchers implemented an intervention in the community of Bakakeng Norte-Sur, Baguio City after the organization, Waves for Water (WFW), observed that residents were still falling ill from waterborne diseases despite having been provided with water filters and containers. A communication audit was conducted and it was found that residents were not cleaning their filters and containers according to the instructions of WFW and would also neglect to read instruction provided to them. Community members also showed minimal knowledge of waterborne diseases, its risks, symptoms and how they can be prevented. The information-motivation behavioral skills model (IMB) posits that the organization must have informational and motivational content in their messages and materials to instill proper health behaviors in a community (Fisher & Fisher, 1992 Kim, Jo & Lee, 2015). These materials are necessary to improve the ability of an individual to practice health behaviors, in this case, regular cleaning of filters and containers (Kim et al., 2015). To address the information, motivation, and behavioral skills needed by the community members, a public communication campaign targeting individual behavior change was implemented. The tactics of this campaign were barangay hall meetings, a barangay hall meeting guide, radio PSAs, an educational video, infographic posters, and market bags with cleaning items.
