Abstract/Summary

This study explored the life management of parents of children with Down Syndrome in which looked into three particular domains such as a) parental stress, b) parental strategies and c) transformational outcomes. The primary research team have investigated on stresses that parents were experiencing while raising their children with Down Syndrome and the different strategies that the parent of the child had used and how thiei self-perception were transformed through their experiences, in order to give an answer to these questions a) what are the different stress that a parent had encountered in raising a child with Down Syndrome? b) having different stressors such as challenges and struggles in raising the child with Down Syndrome, what are the different strategies that the parent had used in coping with their situation? c) How could these stressors and strategies lead in having personal changes in the parent when [it] comes to raising a child with Down Syndrome? The similarities and differences of the parents' experiences were examined through consensual qualitative research by Hill (2005). Eight parents in low socio-economic status were interviewed to gather the data needed. Results revealed that having a child with Down Syndrome was stressful. With the use of different coping strategies to lessen the stress, parents were able to improve their self-perception which helped them to accept the condition of their child.
