Abstract/Summary
Computer networks provide users with access to remote resources and databases, with current technology offering a variety of structures and topologies to suit various applications. However, this capability of a network is limited when the usage of physical media is prevented by factors such as distance, geographical isolation or industrial hazards. This thesis project, a prototype for communication using an optical medium, aims to prove that communication is still possible even without cables or wires, and that the abovementioned factors need not hamper the network's capabilities. The subject matter of the entire project revolves around data communications, and thus network protocols, modulation techniques and communication-related hardware are discussed and applied in this project. To achieve the group's objectives, a simulation of 2 stations in a network was formulated. The functions of serial data transfer, microprocessor-controlled framing, sequencing and error detection, modulation and demodulation and general network management are evident in this prototype. The study concludes with recommendations for enhancement of the prototype for future applications, with these recommendations based from a thorough analysis of project results.
