Abstract/Summary
This paper is an assessment on the current factors that affect accountants and their work. It focuses on uncovering the potential factors that could make accountants leave the profession.
A survey was conducted to know the possible reasons that could make accountants leave the accounting profession. These were further analyzed and divided onto the potential factors for the four accounting profession sectors. The four accounting sectors are identified as the public accounting sector, the private accounting sector, the government accounting sector and finally, the academic accounting sector. Interviews were performed to find out the effects of accountants turnovers to the companies and whether or not they are willing to take actions in order to prevent possible turnovers due to the factors that were discovered. A five point Likert Scale was used in order to quantify the data gathered from the surveys and the Kruskal Wallis Test was used in order to analyze if there were differences between the potential reasons for leaving the profession of the different accounting fields.
The paper was able to gather the top three reasons that could potentially make accountants leave their profession for the accounting profession as a whole plus the different factors for each of the four sectors of the accounting profession. The paper was also able to conclude that there is a difference between the reasons for leaving the public accounting profession as compared to the reasons for leaving the private accounting sector. It was also gathered from the survey that females do not leave the profession than males do.
On the whole, the paper was able to find out the potential reasons that could make accountants leave the profession as a whole and for the four sectors of the accounting profession. Hopefully these factors could be improved in order to prevent high turnovers in the accounting profession.
