Abstract/Summary

Pesticide application is an integral part of farming worldwide and its use is quite popular in farmlands and watershed fields nowadays. In the Philippines, pesticide application has increased over the years, thus, an arising problem has occurred. Pesticides pose a big threat to water quality.

Surface runoff is considered to be a major transporter of the contaminants brought about by pesticide application in the farmlands. Various studies have been conducted but none of them are applied in the Philippine setting.

The objective of this study therefore is to investigate the surface runoff transport of the contaminants in the precipitated water of Angat Watershed, specifically its farmlands. The contaminant movement in the surface through surface runoff was investigated. All the data needed for this study were obtained from the Norzagaray Agricultural Office, Philippine Atmospheric, Geographical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority, and the National Pesticide Analytic Laboratory. Using System Dynamics Analysis, the behavior of the system was simulated and analyzed.

After various runs under different scenarios and alternatives, one proposed solution is to practice Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to kill the pests that destroy the crops. Using IPM as an alternative to pesticide application is the best way to reduce the concentration of pesticides in the surface runoff water.
