Abstract/Summary

This study covered the species richness of ascomycetes, basidiomycetes and bryophytes on selected elevations (875, 1125, 1375, 1625 and 1875 m asl) of the northeastern slope of Mt Banahaw de Lucban, Quezon Province. Collection of fungal and bryophyte samples was carried out within the 300 m2 plot laid per selected elevation in November 2011 and January 2012. Atmospheric (air temperature and relative humidity) and edaphic parameters (soil temperature, pH, % moisture, % organic matter and depth of litter) were also determined per plot. A total of 62 fungal species (53 basidiomycetes and 9 ascomycetes) and 47 bryophytes (47 mosses and 2 hepatics) were found to occur at the examined elevations. Ninety percent (90%) of the fungi are wood-decomposing species and varying in the fruiting body colors and shapes. The air was cold and highly humid while soil has low pH and temperature but high in moisture, organic content and litter. These physico-edaphic characteristics generally become more pronounced with increase in altitude.Fungal species richness was found to decrease with altitude gain following the general trend of fungal distribution along altitudinal gradient, being largely limited by the moisture saturation of the substrate. Bryophyte species richness was found to follow the vegetation zonation determined for the mountain i.e. low in the grassland and secondary forests and high in the montane areas.
