Abstract/Summary
The Cytochrome P4502E1 or CYP2E1 is one of the enzymes that are involved in oxidizing carcinogens from tobacco. They are associated with cancer of the cheek, throat, and lungs. In this study, mutations of the CYP2E1 gene from the cheek cells of young adult men and women who are smokers and non-smokers were investigated for possible smoking related differences. DNA sequences amplified using the primers from Lum and Marchand (1998) were compared between smokers and nonsmokers. Pairwise differences in the DNA sequences were noted by counting the number of transitions, transversions, insertions and deletions. Participants who are of ages 18-30 years old were recruited around Metro Manila. Information for smokers on the length of exposure to smoking, brand of cigarettes used, data on personal and family medical conditions were collected from all the participants (20 males and 20 females). Based on our study, variability is lower for smoker males compared to non-smoker males. Genderassociated sequence differences were also observed between non-smoker males and nonsmoker females. These preliminary results could serve as a support for the conduct of a large-scale study in the Filipino population.
