Abstract/Summary

A total of 15 rats each collected from rice fields in Barangay Tulat, San Jose, Nueva Ecija and from a semi-commercialized residential area along Fidel A. Reyes St. Malate, Manila were examined for ectoparasites and endoparasites. Both rat species had 100% infestation with ectoparasites (Chirodiscoides sp., Radfordia ensifera, Laelaps nutalli, Ornythonissus bacoti, Xenopsylla cheopis and Polyplax spinulosa) and infection with endoparasites (Ancylostoma-like nematode, Capillaria hepatica, Taenia taeniaformis, Raillietina sp., Hymenolepis sp. and Echinostoma sp. and Babesia sp.). Only two ectoparasites (L. nutalli, and R. ensifera) and 4 endoparasites (Ancylostoma-like nematode, C. hepatica, Hymenolepis sp. and Babesia sp.) were common to both rural and urban rats. Ectoparasitism and endoparasitism in rural and urban rats is evident with Chirodiscoides sp. exhibiting host specificity, high infestation rate and parasitemia only in R. tanezumi. In conclusion, both the rural and urban rats are susceptible to a wide range of ectoparasites and endoparasites with the mite Chirodiscoides sp. revealing high infestation rate and specificity to R. tanezumi. The detection of Echinostoma sp. only in R. tanezumi is worth reexamining.
