Abstract/Summary
Selected species of anemonefishes namely Amphiprion clarkii, A. frenatus, and A. ocellaris were tested with selected anemones that include Entacmaea quadricolor, Heteractis crispa, and H. malu to determine their host specificity and sequence of behaviors prior to acclimation. The experiments were done in an improvised experimental set-up and each trial lasted for one hour. The most common behaviors observed in the anemonefish were nibbling, brushing, and getting stung in that order of frequency. The results also indicate that the behaviors of the anemonefishes that were included in the experiment followed a random sequence and do not have a specific pattern except the persistence of the behavior of nibbling at the onset of acclimation process. This could mean that the anemonefishes are searching for chemical cues from the anemone before they acclimate. It was also observed that A. ocellaris acclimated to H. crispa and E. quadricolor and A. frenatus acclimated to H. crispa and H. malu all of which do not correspond to the host species of these fish species in the natural environment. A survey of 13 sites in Talim Bay in Lian, Batangas showed that there is a low density of anemone and anemonefishes. These findings could be due to the overexploitation of these animals to satisfy the demand of aquarists.
