Abstract/Summary

This study is about two contemporary films from the Philippines and Japan. The films were Pusong Mamon (1998) directed by Joel Lamangan and Hush 2001) directed by Ryosuke Hashiguchi. Both directors are experienced in directing homosexual films, which are considered as realistic depictions of homosexuals in their respective countries. Through the use of both films, this study is an attempt to have another perspective regarding same-sex relationships. Both films were about a gay couple with the situation of having a child with a heterosexual woman. Although the films cover a wide variety of topics and conflicts, the researchers focus on the depictions of homosexual relationships. The researchers used their related literature and interviews in analyzing and interpreting to answer the following questions: how was same sex partnership depicted in both films, what are the similarities and differences found in their relationship and what are the symbols and themes that were present in both films. In both films the researchers found that there was a universal need to have a family even if what they came up with was untraditional and unique. That includes both males for parents and an adopted child. Gay people who are in a relationship adopt role-playing that emulates the traditional male female relationship.
