Abstract/Summary

This study focuses on the relationship between spirituality, social support and optimism and posttraumatic growth of persons living with HIV (PLWH). The study also focused on how PLWH in middle adulthood perceive social support, spirituality and optimism and how it is influenced by sexual preference. Questionnaires measuring spirituality, social support and optimism and posttraumatic growth were completed by 17 PLWH. Scores on these questionnaires were correlated to identify their relationships. Significant correlations were between scores of the IERS and relating to others and personal strength. There were also significant findings between the SLQ and finding new possibilities in life. In-depth interviews of 10 middle adult PLWH who were either homosexuals or heterosexuals were conducted. There were 22 extracted themes which pertained to social support, spirituality and optimism. Social support was most significant for the 10 interviewed PLWH while religiousness and optimism was most significant for the qualitative study.
