Abstract/Summary

One hundred and forty stool samples were collected from 60 different households in Zones 753 and 754, Singalong, Manila. Using the direct fecal smear (DFS) method, helminthic parasitic agents were found present in the fecal specimens namely: Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura. Thirty-five percent (49) of the total samples obtained were found positive for ascariasis, 5.7 percent (8) had trichuriasis, and 25 percent (35) had mixed infections. Ascariasis had an overall prevalence rate of 60 percent (84) while trichuriasis had 30.7 percent (43). However, all positive cases were considered to have a light degree of infection. The highest infection rates were noted among the younger age groups. For ascariasis, age group 5 to 10 years had the highest infection rate with 77.78 percent, while trichuriasis reached a peak of 59.26 percent among children 5 to 7 years old. The study further shows that there is no clear relationship between the occurence of parasitic infections with sex of the respondents.
