Abstract/Summary
This study focused on the changes in family interactions brought about by the existence of sibling jealousy. It also examined several factors that contribute to its existence, the different feelings that characterized sibling jealousy and its manifestations. The study tried to answer the extent to which sibling jealousy affected one's daily activities. A descriptive research design was used in describing, categorizing, and analyzing the various responses of the selected subjects with regards to the aforementioned research problems. An interview method was employed in order to acquire the needed data. There were 85 subjects coming from various colleges and universities who were given questionnaires, where a purposive/convenience sampling design was used. The 10 subjects who participated in the interview were chosen among the highest scorers (Upper 25 percent of the sample) in the questionnaire for the main purpose of it was to screen out potential subjects for the interview. The topics found in the questionnaire and interview guide were based on the accumulated literature related to sibling jealousy. The survey consisting of 19 items, used a 5 point scale type of test and the scales ranged from strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree and strongly disagree. In the interview, a guide question was used. Based on the responses, in the interview, the following were considered to be the leading factors that contribute to the existence of sibling jealousy: Unfair parents' treatment, birth rank, sexes of the children, and arrival of a new sibling.;"Moreover, three other factors came out, these were: large age differences, differences in the attitudes of each sibling. The researchers have concluded that these factors can be concluded into primary sources, which included the remaining factors. Sibling jealousy is a combined feelings of anger, irritation inferiority, insecurity and envy. And it could be manifested through withdrawal, competition, regression, aggression and reversal of what parents thought of the unfavored sibling. Sibling jealousy had an effect on one's interaction with parents and other sibling. The only activities that's affected are one's studies and outlook in life."
