Abstract/Summary

A descriptive study of the occupational hazards, health services, safety provisions and related occupational diseases was conducted in Solid Cement Corporation. The occupational hazards were identified through actual observation of the manufacturing process and by measuring environmental parameters such as noise and light intensity, temperature and relative humidity. The hazards identified were categorized as physical, chemical, ergonomics or hazards through cuts and abrasions. Furthermore, data on environmental factors were compared to standard recommended values. Interviews were conducted with safety officer, supervisors and the company physician to obtain facts regarding the safety provisions and health services employed by the company. Medical records from January 1989 to September 1992 were also reviewed to determine the occurrence of occupational diseases among workers. The major occupational hazards identified were dust, light, temperature and relative humidity. The company provided medical services and safety provisions to safeguard the health of the workers. The most affected system was the respiratory system. Moreover, the production department had the highest number of disease incidence. There was a dependent relationship between the occurrence of occupational diseases and the departments where workers are assigned.
