Abstract/Summary

This study describes the level of marital satisfaction, the relationship satisfiers and dissatisfiers of androgynous and sex-typed couples. The 30 androgynous and another 30 sex-typed couples were chosen based on the following criteria: both husband and wife should either be androgynous or sex-typed, the couples should have been married for at least 5 years, and both have at least reached college level. Survey questionnaires were used as the study's instrument. Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) was used to identify the sex-role orientation of the couples. While the Marital Satisfaction Scale (MSS) was utilized to determine the level of marital satisfaction among the two samples. Results reveal that androgynous have a high level of marital satisfaction while sex-typed couples have a moderate level of marital satisfaction. The mean scores in the MSS were then subjected to t-test to determine the significant difference between the means of androgynous and sex-typed couples. With the level of significance set at 0.05. Whereas frequency was used in identifying what they considered relationship satisfiers and dissatisfiers within their marriage. Results indicate that androgynous couples have a higher marital satisfaction than sex-typed couples. In terms of relationship satisfiers and dissatisfiers, both samples considered qualities which are universal.
