Abstract/Summary
Drums that are used in various organic acid solutions are usually corroded by the acids rapidly. Corrosion results in the contamination of the acids in storage, and this causes huge amount of losses and waste. Studies to find an effective coating system for this environment is important. The deterioration behavior of various paints namely epoxy, phenol, polyurethane and polyester was investigated in 5 percent aqueous acetic acid and 5 percent aqueous citric acid solutions at room temperature. The citric acid solutions at room temperature. The deterioration was numerically evaluated by the difference of their voltages obtained in this study. The values of the AV increase on all the paints as immersion time progresses. This means that as time gets longer, the paints are attacked more by the acids causing the corrosion of metal plates. Polyester paint film showed a very high value of AV both in organic acids at a longer immersion time. While phenol paint film showed a low value of AV in 5 percent aqueous actic acid solution. The paints of epoxy, phenol and polyurethane in 5 percent aqueous citric acid solution displayed almost similar behavior and the values of their AV were low.
