Abstract/Summary

A correlational study on teacher characteristics (educational level, professional rank, employment status and tenure) and student rating of teacher effectiveness was done. The study intended to determine whether these teacher characteristics have significant relationship with teacher effectiveness which was determined by the Student Instructional Report, and at the same time, find out which among these characteristics is indicative of an effective teacher. The variables included in the study have not yet been fully researched on. A descriptive type of research design was employed in this study. Teachers who taught from the first to third term of the past school year (1993-1994) were the subjects. These teachers were grouped according to their educational level (BS/AB, MS/MA/ MBA, PhD/EdD/MD), Professorial level (Full Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor and Instructor), Employment status (Permanent and Probationary) and Tenure (Full-time and Part-time). Analysis of Variance was used for the computation of significant difference between the educational level and professorial rank. For the same reason, t-test was utilized for the employment status and tenure. The outcome of the study was that the aforementioned variables have no significant relationship with teacher effectiveness using the Multiple Regression Analysis. None of the variables studied is indicative of an effective teacher. These findings are not consistent with the hypothesis that these teacher characteristics pertain to teacher effectiveness.
