Abstract/Summary

The aim of this study was to look into the nature of relationships, conflicts and conflict-Resolutions or avoidance between aging mothers aged sixty-five and above and their middle-aged daughters aged between thirty-five to forty-five years old. The sample consisted of five pairs of mothers and daughters living together and five pairs living apart. The study specifically aimed to describe and compare the nature of the relationships, conflicts and conflict-resolutions or avoidance of the pairs living together and living apart. In-depth interviews, which lasted an average of thirty-five to forty-five minutes for each pair were used to obtain the necessary information and data about the subject matter. It was observed in the subjects that living arrangements do not really matter. Conflicts arose mostly due to lack of communication or unwillingness to listen to the other party, although some of the respondents believed that living together did or would, indeed, add to this problem.
