Abstract/Summary

This study primarily aimed to know the perception of residents and tourists regarding the physical environment of Metro Manila. Furthermore, it also hoped to find out whether variables such as age, sex, and familiarity with a place influence respondents' perception. The sample population of this study consisted of selected tourists and residents of Metro Manila. A set of semantic differential scales constructed by the researchers was used to determine the subjects' perception of the physical environment of Metro Manila. In determining whether age, sex, and familiarity influence perceptions, Mann-Whitney U-tests was used by the researchers within a .05 significance level. Results showed that there were no significant differences in the perception of the physical environment of Metro Manila as regards to age and sex. However, it was found out that perceptions differ between tourists and residents in relation to the following places, namely: Rizal Park, Intramuros and Makati commercial centers. The researchers also explored what tourists and residents like/dislike most about Metro Manila. The results revealed that both tourists and residents are impressed with the modernization of Metro Manila. However, both agreed that they disliked the traffic, noise and air pollution.
